All About Color

There are some colors that we like and can give us a boost of spirit when looking at it or wearing it and some colors are like the bringer of doom. I guess this very basic human reaction to color brings about 'Color Therapy' though that is not what I'm going to discuss here. Color also plays a very significant meaning in some culture that companies have to be very careful when launching their products internationally.

For example, the color of mourning in South Africa is red, blue in Iran, yellow in Egypt and Myanmar, and in China and Japan, its white. In Thai, widows mourning for their husbands' death will wear purple.

Red is the color most commonly found in national flags. In China, blue is for little girls and black for little boys. Cleopatra loves purple. It’s a royal color. In ancient Greece, green symbolized victory. “Yellow journalism” refers to irresponsible and alarmist reporting.

Think of a color and recall the first product/brand that comes to mind. Red reminds me of Coke, orange reminds me of Sunquick and Lux and Cadbury comes to mind when I think of purple. Even if my life depends on it, I can't seem to associate any other products/brands to other colors right now. I'm either too lazy to think or color association to other brand/product has not been emphasized or not successful.

Color can also improve our mood. In color psychology, light consists of seven color energies (think of the rainbow). Using the right color can give a boost of energy to fight that Monday blues. Here's an extraction from Heavenly Ideas :: Color Psychology website.

There are also few other interesting points about colors raised in this website.

  • Red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations.

  • Pink is tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

  • People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weight lifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

  • While yellow is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

I should be asking the entire color psychologist out there this question though, what happen to all the other colors? There ARE many shades of blue. What about pastel colors? If I like light blue, it doesn't mean I'll have the same liking to navy blue.

Find out your personality based on this Color Quiz. Again, the colors are so limited. But just for fun, do it anyway. My result, wow looks like I have quite a problem there. I changed my mind. Don't take the test. The results not fun. I like bright and cheerful colors so it’s only logical I choose these type of colors first and leave the dark colors in the end. Unless, they did not use web safe color and the original color is displayed differently in my browser. This situation is explained here.

Your Existing Situation

Unwilling to extend herself or exert undue effort (with the possible exception of sexual activity). Feels that further progress requires more from her than she is willing or able to give. Would prefer reasonable comfort and security rather than the rewards of greater ambition.

Your Stress Sources

Seeks independence and freedom from any restriction and therefore avoids obligations or anything which might prove hampering. She is being subjected to considerable pressure and wants to escape from it so that she can obtain what she needs, but tends to lack the necessary strength of purpose to succeed in this.

Your Restrained Characteristics

Believes that she is not receiving her share--that she is neither properly understood nor adequately appreciated. Feels that she is being compelled to conform, and close relationships leave her without any sense of emotional involvement.

Willing to become emotionally involved and able to achieve satisfaction through sexual activity, but tries to avoid conflict.

Your Desired Objective

Over-imaginative and given to fantasy or day-dreaming. Longs for interesting and exciting things to happen and wants to be admired for her charm.

Your Actual Problem

Feels restricted and prevented from progressing; seeking a solution which will remove these limitations.

Your Actual Problem #2

The tensions induced by trying to cope with conditions which are really beyond her capabilities, or reserves of strength, have led to considerable anxiety and a sense of personal (but unadmitted) inadequacy. She reacts by seeking outside confirmation of her ability and value in order to bolster her self-esteem. Inclined to blame others so that she may shift the blame from herself. Anxiously searching for solutions and prone to compulsive inhibitions and compulsive desires.
