Sunny Farewell to 2003

In a few hours, we'll bid farewell to 2003 and welcome 2004, full of hope for prosperity and happiness. Reflecting over things that has happened for the last 364++ days, today, I'm glad I've managed to get through an emotionally challenging times, discover some new friends, discover a few who don't deserve to be called a friend, and get in touch with long lost friends to name a few. Basically, I've learned many new things for the past one year. The experience may make me bitter and cynical in some ways, unforgiving to some people and feeling more content and sure of what I want in other ways. In other words, I've grown a lot. Hopefully, more mature to face new challenges ahead.

Resolutions?? The only one I made recently is to meet up with an old friend at least once a month. Two other things that I think is worthy of my resolution is to keep myself healthy and happy. Instead of taking my own over the counter medications for my asthma and allergies, I've seen a specialist. Actually, it's two to be exact. My personal evaluation, the first specialist is hopeless. I'm giving a chance to the second one. If he turns out to be hopeless too, I'll just find another.

My part is to do light exercise every morning. This has always been my New Year resolution but couldn't really carry it through when I always wake up sneezing or wheezing. Actually, more often, I'm just late :)

I've always like to travel. But responsibility to family and the never ending work has always held me back. I'm not going to wait for the right time anymore. Just do it whenever I'm in the mood and the opportunity is there. Just take a time off, and off we go. I'm also going to rid myself of all the responsibilities that I don't feel like holding anymore. I did not accept certain tasks and change my mind later. Instead, several things were kind of thrust upon me. All that unwanted responsibilities is sucking and draining my energy.

So 2004, here I come!!!

A quote that everyone should hold on to:-

"No one can go back and make a brand new start. But anyone can start from now and "make a brand new ending."

M2u 3rd Party Transfer is Back

Maybank2u's 3rd Party Transfer facility is back. That will make life easier for most people. However, I still can't pay my Mayban Finance VISA credit card via M2u. I called to ask if there's any way I can pay the credit card bills via Maybank2u and their response is, for security reason, you can't. How inconvenient. The scenario is like giving a candy to a kid and then takes it back. After giving me the convenience of paying my card bills online, now I have to go to the bank. Urgghhh!!

Another inconvenience is we have to key in our password and IC no. every time making an online bill payment. Well, it is all a matter of security but it gets on your nerve if you have to pay 8 bills at a time. That's what I normally do. Sigh! I know the right person(s) I should direct my anger to is all those trying to get other people's password by devious means. May you rot in hell!

Destinasi Budget

shamsul ghau-ghauDestinasi Budget (or 'Budget Destination) is one of my favorite Ch-9 programs. The show, hosted by Shamsul Ghau-Ghau is a travel program which shows interesting travel destination all over Malaysia.

What makes the program different than any other travel program is the 'budget' theme. Shamsul Ghau-Ghau will show that you can have an interesting holiday (normally at 3 days 2 nights) for RM300 or less. What makes the program interesting to me is it realistically shows where you can stay, what you can do, where you can go and where you can eat for the 3 days and 2 nights holidays, and with several options for you to choose from.

Other similar programs will normally show all the places you can go in one state, let's say Pahang for example. It is impossible for any person to cover the whole of Pahang's travel destination at any one holiday. And people have no idea of where to stay and what they can do.

The program is aired every Tuesday at 8.30 p.m. No! I'm not associated to Ch-9 or the program's producer in any way. I truly find the program fascinating and informative. Last night's travel destination is Langkawi. And among the travel destinations I've watched is Penang, Taiping, Kuantan/Cherating, and Cameron Highlands.

Beautiful Malaysia : Fraser's Hill

Last Saturday, my family and I went to Fraser's Hill. The place is relatively near to my place (only about 60km) so I decided to look at "our own backyard" (relatively speaking), before going to other places further from home. We've only moved to this area about 2-3 years back so it's not as if we've always been here and never ever been to Fraser's Hill. Anyway, enough of that. For the general location of Fraser's Hill, you can refer to this map.

We begin our journey at 10 a.m. and reach Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) town about 20 minutes later. I love KKB's scenic route and its light traffic (refer picture above). Along the way, we can see small streams, bigger ones, lake and ponds. I don't know how to swim but I do love water. After about 10 minutes leaving KKB town, there's a Sungai Selangor Dam at Pertak area. I've been there a few years ago, before there's a dam. Once for a camping trip and the second time, just a day trip. The Pertak waterfall is so beautiful. I still have the photos but too lazy to dig for it. Here's the picture of the dam.

Some issues on the Sungai Selangor Dam can be found here.

After passing the new and comfortable road at the Pertak area, it started to become very narrow and winding. At some places, the road looks very fragile, with a ravine to our left, and at other places, the hill on our right looks as if it's going to fall on us any minute. There are many road works so one has to be very careful. Sometimes, only one side of the road can be used for both side of the traffic. We reach the gate 10 minutes after it opens. For those who have never been to Fraser's Hill, the last 8km to reach the Fraser's Hill town, people have to use a very narrow single lane road. The gate is open for forty minutes at odd hours for vehicles going uphill, and forty minutes at even hours for vehicles to go downhill. The complete schedule can be found here. We reach the town after 15-20 minutes. I've not really observe the time. This is a good enough guide map of Fraser's Hill for those who wants to have a general idea of the area.

My activity there is snapping photos of course. Not long after we reach the town, it started to drizzle. The cold mist feels very refreshing. After a lunch of nasi lemak, laksa, banana fritters and hot tea, the weather becomes clear again, so the photo shoot continues. Here are some of the photos taken but I didn't manage to visit Jeriau waterfall this time. I'll definitely visit Fraser's Hill again and hopefully by then, all the road works are completed.

That night, at home, as I lie down to sleep, I thought I'd be dreaming about Fraser's Hill. Or if it's gonna be some horror in it, the winding road, the deep ravine and the jungle is an ideal setting for a perfect nightmare. But instead, I dreamt of Yusri of KRU or now also known as Mr. Fazira (Erra Fazira's husband). Iiieeewww... how can other people's husband be in my dream??? I'm not even his fan. Anyway, in the dream, he treated me for a meal at an unknown hotel. I don't remember our full conversation except this part. And even then, not the exact dialog. I told him his treat at this particular hotel is nothing because I can afford to pay for it myself. It was said as a statement and not with the intention to provoke. And his response is, "Good lah a lady like you", or something to that effect. Hehe...

Here's some site with good information on Fraser's Hill:-

From My Inbox : AAADD

I just wanted to let you know that I have recently been diagnosed with AAADD - Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it goes...

I decided to do the laundry, start down the hall and notice the newspaper on the table. OK, I'm going to do the laundry...

BUT FIRST I'm going to read the newspaper. After that, I notice the mail on the table. OK, I'll just put the newspaper in the recycle stack...

BUT FIRST I'll look through the pile of mail and see if there are any bills to be paid. Yes. Now where is the checkbook? Oops... there's the empty glass from yesterday on the coffee table. I'm going to look for that checkbook...

BUT FIRST I need to put the glass in the sink. I head for the kitchen, look out the window, notice my poor flowers need a drink of water, I put the glass in the sink and there's the remote for the TV on the kitchen counter. What's it doing here? I'll just put it away...

BUT FIRST I need to water those plants. I head for the door and...Aaaarrgh!!... stepped on the cat. Cat needs to be fed. Okay, I'll put the remote away and water the plants...

BUT FIRST I need to feed the cat.

END OF DAY: Laundry is not done, newspapers are still on the floor, glass is still in the sink, bills are not paid, checkbook is still lost, and the cat ate the remote control...and, when I try to figure out how come nothing got done today, I'm baffled because... I KNOW I WAS BUSY ALL DAY! I realize this condition is serious...I'd get help...

BUT FIRST...I think I'll check my e-mail...

Notes: Sounds familiar? Blame the age :)

So Is It Better Being Single?

An article in The Star last Saturday caught my attention. Its title, "Single and Having a Ball 10 Good Reasons to Stay Single" by Dawn Goldsmith. I'm going to join the 'single lady in her 30s' category soon and there's a war within myself on what is human nature, what's prescribed in the Qur'an, what do I want for myself and my observation on married friends.

God created everything in pairs. Sky and earth, land and sea, night and day, male and female, etc. This is mentioned in the Qur'an, Surah 78 (An-Naba') : Verse 8, "And (have We not) created you in pairs". It is in human nature to find a partner (or more) in their life. Some on permanent basis, and for some, its short term. It is natural for almost every being on this planet to procreate or there wouldn't be any species left in this world. And for this, most species would need partners or the very least, spores from the male flowers (for plants of course). Aside from the need to sustain the survival of a particular species, there is also the emotional side to be considered. We need emotional support from our loved ones to live a meaningful life. It can be from their partners, friends or family members. And for some people, the need for emotional support from a partner is stronger than from friends and families. This is perfectly natural.

I believe almost every religion prescribed marriage to allow for procreation and fulfilling the human's emotional needs. In the Qur'an, Surah 30 (Ar-Rum) : Verse 21,"And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.". There are other verses specifically related to marriage but this one mentions the emotional side.

A mutual need (symbiotic relationship) is of course what everyone is looking for in a relationship. In the past, the husband is the provider for the family. The wife will do the household chores, cook and take care of the children. But in my personal opinion, the wife's contribution in farming for example, is normally overlooked. It seems like women in the olden days also perform multiple roles just like the modern day women. Except we don't call farming or tending to vegetable gardens or whatever they do to help their family a career. Anyway, everyone seems to accept the status quo at that time.

Come modern days, things changed more than slightly. Many people would question the so called 'symbiotic relationship' of a marriage now. Married men are enjoying the benefit of shared income, someone to clean up and cook for them to name a few. And women on the other hand, has the added burden of providing for the family aside from their traditional role. Most men are not able to support the family on their income alone at their desired standard of living. I've always wonder why when the wife has shared the responsibility of providing for the family, the husband didn't share the responsibilities of the women's traditional role. And we have seen an increasing cases where instead of being grateful for what the wife did, the husband will find a mistress or marry a second, third, fourth wife. Looks parasitic instead of a symbiotic now isn't it?

I've heard marriage horror stories from my mom's friend. And now that I have married friends, it's their horror stories that I'm listening too. Some people may point out that from all my married friends, only 10-20 percent has horror stories to tell. But who can assure me that the 80% will be blissfully married till death do us part? And the horror stories are not limited to a particular race or religion too.

Here is something from the article for us single ladies to ponder upon.

Ten Good Reasons to Stay Single

1. There's only one load of laundry to wash.

2. You get to be in charge of the remote control!

3. There's more room in the bed.

4. You can wear your grungiest sweats, forget the make-up and sing I Will Survive at the top of your lungs . . . and nobody minds.

5. The toilet seat stays down.

6. You can flirt shamelessly with any guy that comes your way . . . and get away with it.

7. You don't have to explain to anyone why it was absolutely necessary to buy that RM3,000 dress or those thigh-high leather boots.

8. The only mother you have to put up with is your own.

9. You can have male friends - and lots of them.

10. You don't have to worry about those few extra kilos.

Did you know?

A US survey found that the quality of a man's life improves when he gets married. Not so for women. When a woman ties the knot, the quality of her life declines. It seems old habits die hard - women still do the majority of housework, even though they may have just as demanding, if not more demanding, jobs than their spouses.

"In sickness and in health" is right! A recent British survey showed that the healthiest groups of people are single females. The sickest? Married women.

Other points highlighted by ladies interviewed in the article are:

"I can come home from a hard day at work and not have to bother about cooking dinner or cleaning up - I can just veg out, watch TV, eat junk food if I like.

"I don't have to worry about looking my best or being the perfect woman. It's wonderful!" says my friend Amy, who after two years in a difficult live-in relationship with her boyfriend, decided to cut loose and live the single life.

"Life gets so demanding. There I was with a full-time job and at the end of the day I still felt I had to cook dinner for my boyfriend. Even though he didn't expect that from me, I guess I'd been brought up to believe that women have to take care of their men. Now, living by myself, I can be totally selfish. There's something very comforting in that."

Women today are hoping to achieve a certain degree of economic freedom before they commit themselves to marriage. Financial independence is a safety net our mothers never had.

"When my mother was my age she was already married with three children. When I see how her life has become, I really don't want my life to be like that. She waits on my father. She doesn't seem to have her own life," says Jackie, a beautiful 28-year old advertising executive who loves her job, and enjoys her life to the fullest . . . without a boyfriend.

"I am realising that my 20s are about emotional growth and learning about myself. I am very wary of making the same mistakes my mother made. I honestly don't think I'm ready to be a wife or mother at the moment - that takes such a tremendous amount of commitment. And besides I'm having too much fun," she explains.

"And yes, I do get lonely sometimes, and I wonder if I'm doing the right thing, especially when I see couples together. But then even married women or those in steady relationships get lonely and depressed."

Adds Jackie: "My closest girlfriend lives with her boyfriend, and she often complains to me that he has stopped being romantic and she feels taken for granted. So I think at this point in my life the advantages of being single far outweigh the disadvantages."

If anything, we have stronger role models today than ever before. While yesterday's role models may have been our stay-at-home mothers, today's icons are gorgeous and independent career women.

That's not to say that all women in relationships feel trapped and unhappy, but it does seem that those who are happiest in their relationships are those who chose to wait longer before making that commitment.

These are the women who have lived full lives as single women, who have taken opportunities in life and have had a great time doing it. They learned how to take care of themselves, how to make their own decisions - they have become well-balanced, healthy women in their own right.

Many look back on their single days with fond memories and wouldn't trade them for the world. Still others tremble with horror when they contemplate how different their lives might have been if they had married a lot younger. Being 30 and single is no longer the stigma it once was. These days women are realising that having a husband or boyfriend is not synonymous with "happily ever after".

Instead of playing the dutiful wife or the loyal girlfriend, women are establishing closer networks of friends, learning new skills and cultivating exotic hobbies.

They're all too busy to think about a relationship right now. In other words of my friend Pamela: "I'm 30, single . . . and having a ball!"

So is it better being single?

It seems like marriage is a very high risk situation. As most people knew, the higher the risk, the greater the satisfaction if the outcome is as expected or better. But if the outcome falls way below our expectation, it would be disastrous. So, it would be better for women who choose to end our single life, to find someone whom we wouldn't mind to be sharing the burden of providing for the family and also doing the traditional women role (if the husband turned out to be not as expected in terms of roles and responsibilities). Right?? Now where do we find one that would fit that bill?

What Have I Been Doing?

I've been quiet for the past few days. No, I'm not so lucky to have gone on a holiday. I am now slaving to finish my work before the year ends. Finally, this procrastinator is in the mood to do some real work :) This entry is my reward for finishing 2/3rd of what I'm supposed to do.

There are no words to describe the feeling of accomplishing something. Anyway, I better hold on to that celebration mood until I really finished off everything.

Here's something I do for a break :) What with the LOTR:ROTK fever, I figured this quiz is very appropriate.

Your an Elf
Your an Elf!

You are very beautiful and tall, graceful and smart and mysterious (you can even be very dangerous when your mad)

Are you an Elf? Hobbit? Black Rider? or a dwarf? (Lord of The Rings)

Yellow Rose

yellow
Your soul is bound to the Yellow Rose: The Gentle.

"I've travelled through the land of surrender and seen it all. I throw my heart out and keep my head up, and now I travel through the land of peace."

The Yellow Rose is associated with friendship, intuition, and fun. It is governed by the goddess Hestia and its sign is The Intertwined Rings, or True Friendship.

As a Yellow Rose, you always look out for your friends. You would much rather have strong ties with friends than a single tie with a lover and your devotion to your friends is clear. You may have great intuition and be able to read emotions clearly, but sometimes you can seem distant yourself.

If You're Granted 3 Wishes

If you're granted 3 wishes, what would you wish for? I've asked myself this question many moons ago, when I still ride busses to go to work. What else can you do while waiting for the bus or standing in one, desperately hoping the person sitting nearest to you will be stopping at the next stop. Thinking keeps me sane.

Obviously everyone would wish to be rich, happy, famous, etcetera etcetera etcetera (borrowing phrases from Anna and The King). But it is no fun being rich without putting in any effort right! To be happy, comes from within. You don't need genie's wishes to be happy. You also can't force people to like you, be it your friends or the girl/guy you've always admire. It might turn out the girl/guy you admire is not the one you want. A perfect example would be in the movie 'While You Were Sleeping'. I know there are people out there who will use any means and methods to get someone to love them and marry them. Isn't that the same as wanting a zombie to like you? The person will marry you against their will. Anyway, I've digress.

The 3 things I would wish for if I have 3 wishes are:

1. For people in busses to be more considerate. If there is space at the back, for goodness sake MOVE! Other people want to go back too. Oftentimes, I would squeeze myself in between people so I can be at the back. Trust me; this is the only way I feel I can breathe. Not to mention safer from naughty hands and elbows and what-nots. But of course, even if the Prime Minister's kneeling and pleading for people to be more considerate, who would listen? So I wish for an invisible genie's hand pulling these people by their ears so they'll make room for other people to board the bus.

2. For fathers not to smoke at home and especially when they're holding their kids. Those poor babies have no choice but to inhale second hand smoke from the person who claims to love them very much, but is actually slowly poisoning their own kids without any feelings of remorse. I wish for their cigarettes to be transformed into a baby's pacifiers.

3. For people who throw rubbish from their car, I wish the genie would automatically throw back 10 times the amount of rubbish back into their car. Serves them right don't you think?

What's your wishes?

Blog Bug for Bad Writer

For an unknown reason, I was unable to publish my blog yesterday. I tried the whole day without any success. That is making me feel as if there is something in me that I want to let out but can't. Like when we want to say something but unable to do so. The feeling of uneasiness was with me the whole day.

I'm a bad writer. In my line of work, I've to do training and documentations and I have no problem with both. Talking is easy especially when you know your subject well. Documentation is just explaining the steps in the right order. The points that I’ve to put forth are already there. There maybe two or three variations of doing one task so you just explain them all systematically. But ask me to write a simple essay of any topic. That would freeze my brain in no time. There are 101 ways you can approach a subject. Where do I start? What points do I want to include and which point will strengthen my ideas? It is normal for me to stare at the screen for minutes before forming my one line of sentences. Can you imagine how I'll perform in essay examinations?

I can be a good editor. I can comment people's writing. I can give interesting ideas and suggestions. But ask me to write something from scratch and everyone will know I'm a fraud. I've realized this during my SPM time which was ages ago. I used to write good essays in my pre-SPM education. I'd be praised for mature points from someone so young when I was in primary school. But come SPM time, my brain did not function in the same way anymore. If I remember correctly, there are parts in BM and English papers where we can decide on letter writing, essays or summary writing. I chose summary writing and I know I made the right choice.

Having my own blog is a good way to force me to write something. And having the occasional audience also forces me to write something coherent and understandable. I found out that it is not enough to just be able write something. I must have my writing published in the cyberspace for that final sense of accomplishment. The existence of my writing in the cyberspace means I've successfully written something that I think is good enough for other people to read. Thus, having a blog bug even for a day can be an impediment to one bad writer's final sense of achievement.

Perahu Dondang Sayang

The whole family went to Putrajaya yesterday (more details on Putrajaya can be found here and here). It was on my mom's insistence actually but I don't really mind as I can happily snap pics with my not so new toy by now. Luckily, the weather was generally OK. It got very cloudy sometimes but not so gloomy. The highlight of the day was the boat ride. Themed 'Perahu Dondang Sayang' (RM20 per adult for one trip), we were entertained with Dondang Sayang music along the way. If I was not busy snapping photos, I would have drifted to sleep lulled by the music, light wind caressing my face and the after effect of tomyam, rice, and coconut juice for lunch :)

Dondang Sayang is a Malaccan traditional music, a very famous form of entertainment in the olden days, especially during weddings. It is normally a duet where the two will be bantering (singing) in the form of 'pantun' (a special kind of poem) in rhythm with the music. It is also said the bantering can go on until the wee hours of morning, the old and young will be enjoying it and cheering for their favorite half of the duet when they give a good 'pantun'. I'm not sure of the position of 'Dondang Sayang' in Malaccan weddings now though. Anyone care to highlight? (More info on Dondang Sayang can be found here and here.)

Here's some photo from the 80+ pics taken yesterday. Click on the photo for larger image. All pics have been resized and optimized so as not to exceed 150KB.

Malaysian Flavours and Friendship

Today didn't turn out quite as planned but it's not entirely bad. I bought a book entitled "Malaysian Flavours" by Lee Su Kim (2nd edition). This book is a compilation of articles from Lee Su Kim's "Malaysian Flavour" column in The Star which ran for about 3 year, until 1996. OK! This is an old book but it just caught my attention and I feel like reading it.

Her witty insights of Malaysians are refreshing and make me look and appreciate things that I normally took for granted. This book captures the essence of what it is to be Malaysian. Her articles on Malaysian English is hilarious. Now I know I was not that bad...or should I say have a very 'unique' way of mingling the two languages. And the funny thing is, when I read all the examples, I can imagine a friend who will exactly fit the scenarios, with her expressions and her sing song 'Manglish'. It didn't help too that I'll immediately think of her whenever I watch PCK or specifically, PCK's wife :) You dunno PCK? Aiyyahh.. how long you stay in Malaysia man? Hehe.. I don't think I sound quite right.

And then a meeting with a very old friend. After the initial scrutinizing and confirming that both of us didn't change one little bit (except for older and wiser ;)), we comfortably exchange stories just like the old days. She's very helpful when I first started working (feels like ages ago) and is still very helpful now. When I told her about my first business attempt and the problems I'm facing, she immediately cracked her head trying to find some solution. I really didn't expect that. But its nice to know I have such a friend. We also decided we enjoyed each other's company so much that we should meet at least once a month. Meeting with friends can be very difficult considering where one's work and home is. But I'll try to make this one into one of my new year's resolution.

Here's something on friendship from "Malaysian Flavours".

True friends are like diamonds

Precious and rare

False friends are like autumn leaves

Scattered everywhere.

Far out in the ocean

There lies a rock

On it is written

Forget me not.

Make new friends

Keep the old

One is silver

The other is gold.

Foot Massage Please!!!

Oh God, I'm dying for a foot massage. It has been a really long day. Upon checking all my emails for the day, I discovered a disturbing email from one of my yahoogroup. I didn't realize a simple discussion can be construed as what Malaysians would term, "dropping one's water face". I'm tired and in no mood to make amends. I never meant to "drop anyone's water face". If what I thought as a healthy discussion is taken in the wrong way, too bad. This is no different from the many discussions we see in the blogs or any discussion group. There will always be someone who take things in the way it is not intended. I don't want to term this kind of people as close minded. I might make the same mistake too. For now, I'll just leave it as it is.

Hmm.. back to the foot massage, if only I can get one now. But, not being able to have someone do it for me doesn't mean I can't do it myself. First, we have to find some info. Here's a few good one to begin with.

  1. How to Give a Foot Massage

  2. Foot Massage Technique

  3. Foot Massage and Benefits

First, start with a clean feet. Use any cream or lotion to gently massage one foot after another. Ahh.. forget about techniques. Just do it as long as you feel good :)

On Being A Lefthanded

I still remember when my brother and I got our first writing lesson from mum. Both of us uses our left hand to write. My mum keeps pulling the pencil from our left hand and switched it to our right. My brother is successfully converted to a right-handed but not stubborn me. And then in school, my teacher will keep straightening my book since as most left handers, I have to write at a 90° angle. Don't bother lah teacher, I'm comfortable writing my way.

Before I was adept at making 'correct marking' or 'tick' using my lefthand as it will be of a wrong side, I have to change hands whenever i have to make the correct angle tick mark. My right hand is still useful for that purpose. I don't have that problem anymore as I've practiced using my left. In another instance, my arabic class teacher forced me to use my right hand when writing on the board. Either she really thinks its not clean to use my left hand to write arabic letters or she just believes I can actually use my right hand. I managed to do it but all the characters are thick and big and look a bit like I'm writing 'khat' instead. Writing on blackboard was OK since the surface is rough and I can control my writing. Whiteboard's smooth surface poses another problem as my handwriting will look worse than that of doctors :)

I'm not a hardcore left-handers though. I'm only left-handed when it comes to writing and blowing my nose. Really can't figure out why the act of blowing nose requires my left hand and right brain. I do that a lot since I'm prone to allergies and it really is useful especially when I'm eating. Bowling... I'm not good at it but I can use both hands for the purpose. I've tried using only one hand hoping that I can find the best rhythmn, at least 25% of Shalin's skill but I'm still nowhere near that mark. Sigh!

Some Facts About Lefthanders

Some researchers suggest that left-handed people are, on average, more creative or intelligent. There is no evidence that left-handers are any more or less intelligent overall than right-handers but there is evidence that the range of talents is greater among the left-handed. Some famous names in the “southpaw community” are Joan of Arc, Winston Churchill and Alexander the Great as was Buzz Aldrin, who steered his craft onto the moon with his left hand.

Skills that are normally found in one or the other side of the brain can be found in the opposite side or on both sides for left-handers. For example, while language skills are located on the left side of the brain, they can often be found on the right side or even on both sides for left-handers. This results in a greater recovery rate for left-handers from stroke and other head or brain injuries.

Snake in a Dream

Dream interpretation has been around from a very very long time ago. There's even a story in the Qur'an about Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) a.s. interpreting the king's dream when he's in the prison (Refer Surah Yusuf verse 43-49).

I'm not sure about other culture, but in the Malay society, I've learned from the elders that if an unmarried lady dreamt of being coiled or bitten by a snake, she will be getting married soon. If they just saw the snake, or the snake just look at them without doing anything, it means someone is interested. I wonder how a snake which is feared by most people, and normally has a negative connotation like, 'as slippery as a snake', can be interpreted as a suitor or a husband.

Another interpretation of snake in a dream from the dream dictionary in HyperDictionary.com is below.

Seeing a snake or be bitten by one in your dream means hidden fears and worries that are threatening you. Your dream may be alerting you to something in your waking life that you are not aware of or that has not yet surfaced. The snake may also be seen as phallic and thus symbolize dangerous and forbidden sexuality. The snake may also refer to a person around you who is callous, ruthless, and can't be trusted. As a positive symbol, snakes represent transformation, knowledge and wisdom. It is indicative of self-renewal and positive changes.

There is also another interpretation here and you can submit your dreams to be interpreted if you want.

Have you been dreaming of snakes lately anyone?

Subject: Problem Connecting to TM Net

Hi,

I've been having problem connecting to TM Net (1515) since the third week of November if I remember correctly. It keeps giving me "username and password incorrect in domain" error message. If it has been incorrect, then how can I receive my emails, log in to TM Net Web Mail and also login to http://isp.tm.net.my/support? This has always happen before but it will be fine the next time i log in or the next day without me having to do anything. But this time, it has continued for about 2 weeks. What's wrong? How can this be fixed?

Regards.

Between You and God

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you. Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight. Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the end, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.

I've had permission to put this beautiful sayings in my blog. What an eye opener. Thank you believe.

Who Can Talk About Anything?

I'm writing this in response to SuaraMalaysia.com's entry on 'Who can talk about Islam?'. Instead of focusing on Islam, let's look at it from the point of view of 'anything'.

Who can talk about anything? Everyone can talk about anything. The response however, will depend on who you are, what are your credentials and who are your audiences. If you're a thermo nuclear scientist, talking theories to people like me, who will give a hoot? But a thermo nuclear students or fellow scientists will listen with interest, with few comments and remarks, and maybe a heated debate will pursue. If you're a 'warung' (stall) politician, people at the 'warung' will listen with interests if they have nothing better to do, but they know whatever you say will disappear with the wind the moment the words leave your lips. The same talk will be repeated again and again, day after day, but still nothing comes out of it.

But, if you're interested in something, aside from listening to opinions, you might want to do your own research and ask questions to the right person until you get the clarification that you want. Just like lecturer in class, he/she might not be interested to entertain students with questions that obviously show they have not done any homework/reading at all. So you might want to make sure at least people will not think whatever comes out from you is not due to your ignorance and stupidity. Admit what you don't know, that you're not sure about something, but that is what you've heard or read. And then ask people nicely what do they think about it?

I don't like to be dragged into discussion where people are not really interested to know the truth but instead, prefers to sprout whatever they want to say like a 'warung' politician. It happened to me once. A non-Muslim colleague passionately say this and that about Islam, how Islam discriminate people by saying non-Muslim is a 'kafir', and non-Muslim eat dirty things. My first question is what did he meant by dirty things. He told me Muslims like to use the word 'haram' for food. And I told him, 'haram' means forbidden, not dirty. That really stopped him in track. I don't have to say anything else but you should see how uncomfortable he is trying to take back his remarks. 'Kafir' means non-believer. If you're a Muslim, non-Muslim is a non-believer. If you're a Christian, non-Christian is a non-believer. Whether you're a believer or non-believer of any religion, what you are has no significance except in religious matter. There must be some way of identifying those who are not a believer and to Muslims, 'kafir' is the word for non-believer. It didn't occur to me before that a word can be an issue.

That particular event with my colleague really opened up my eyes. I've always respected his intelligence. We are in the business of information management. We have every means available to us IF we want to find the information. And here, I have a colleague (an intellectual person) who simply says things without even some basic knowledge of the subject. An intelligent man can surely find the information that he wants if he's interested to know the truth. Obviously, he's not interested. I don't care if he's not interested. But it will be better for him if he don't say anything in the first place when the subject matter is not of interest to him. I still respected him (in the matters of work) but I also know he can be ignorant and stupid on other things.

Can you talk about anything? Of course you can. What category are you in?

1. Those with the right credentials

2. 'Warung' politicians

3. Those with interest in the subject (you've done your own research/homework)

I know I'm from the 3rd category. I'd listen with interest to people on category 1 and 3. If you're from 2, don't waste my time.

More Problem With Maybank2u.com

For those who have been comfortably paying your maybank credit card bills using maybank2u, you may not be able to do so for God-knows-how-long. Previously, credit card payment was under the same category of bill payment. Now, they have a special section for credit card. But when I select the credit card drop-down list, none was displayed there. Alas, I can't pay my bill. Now who is going to pay for my late charges? Gggrrrr!!!!

Ghost manning support@tm.net.my

Finally, I can get connected using my TM Net account after 3 weeks. I was too lazy to make a report last time and just use my jaring connection. But I decided to email them at support@tm.net.my to report my problem on the 1st of December (last monday). I did not get any reply until today. Fedup waiting, I called their customer support at 1-300-88-1515 and the problem was solved in less than 10 minutes. I wonder now who is manning the support@tm.net.my email address? Based on the questions asked when I called them, I've given the same details in my email. So what is their problem?

If you go to this address http://isp.tm.net.my/dial1515/dial1515.shtml, you'll be able to see somewhere in the page saying "Customers can call TM Net Customer Interaction Center at 1-300-88-1515 or email to support@tm.net.my for any enquiries."

I prefer email as I don't feel like pushing so many buttons when you call most support center, and then being greeted by unenthusiastic person at the end of the line. However, I consider myself lucky this time to be getting a nice and helpful someone at the end of the line. Sorry I don't really get your name. My problem is solved now. But I'll forever be wondering who is manning that support email address.

Teach Them How To Fish

I'm fuming when reading PAS state assemblyman's statement highlighted in Screenshot. Please allow me to quote you Jeff.

PAS state assemblyman Satiful Bahari Mamat asked the Terengganu government to promote polygamy rather than teaching computer literacy to single mothers who face financial hardship. He said this is allowed under Islam.

He said computer will be difficult for them to learn.

Before anyone get me wrong, I'm not pro any political parties. You did things right, you get my support.

Saying computer will be difficult for them to learn is another way of saying they are not intelligent enough to learn. Practically, some will be slow learners, and some will be a fast learner (both for men and women), but we'll never know until we give them a chance. And based on the higher percentage of female in the university, I dare say it will not be a problem for them to learn. There are 1001 things you can do with some computer knowledge. If there are 4000 single mothers in the state, I'd say it's impossible if not even 10% of them can come up with great ideas.

The prophet s.a.w also encourages all Muslim man and woman to seek knowledge. Among the hadith are:

"Seek knowledge even as far as China."

Ayeshah praised the women of Ansar for their spirit of enquiry and learning, saying, 'How praiseworthy are the women of Ansar that their modesty does not prevent them from attempts at learning and the acquisition of knowledge.' (Sahih Muslim Kitab al Tahrat).

He who goes out in search of knowledge is in God's path till he returns. (Tirmidhi, Darimi).

And a special quote that I'd like to highlight to you:

"Give a woman a fish, you feed her for the day. Teach the woman how to fish, you'll feed her for the lifetime".

Giving a woman a husband does not necessarily mean you feed her for a lifetime Mr. Satiful. Asking a man to take another wife when he's unable to support them is certainly not allowed in Islam. Do you have any idea how many Muslim men of marriageable age are there in your state, their level of income, the number of children they have and any other responsibilities they might have like supporting parents or siblings? Based on that information, you can estimate how many men can actually take another wife from the 4000 single mothers if they have not already have more than one. Even if they can take more than one wife, some might not want to for fearing they will not be able to do justice to them. You then have to make some discount on these men to come up with the real numbers.

It is easy to say what is allowed and not allowed in Islam. I know Muslim men like to say that especially when it comes to polygamy but if you backed it up with real numbers, you might appear as making sound suggestion.

I have strong faith in all women in the world. The Terengganu women CAN learn computers. It's easier than managing a husband.

Latest from Maybank2u.com

Sigh! Why does this has to happened when you need to use something. See the latest notice from Maybank2u.com. It may have been around for several days now but I was just informed about it by my brother.

Please be advised that due to our system maintenance, Third Party Funds Transfer, eStanding Instruction and Interbank Fund Transfer (GIRO) services will not be available until further notice

The above notice is displayed on the first page after you login. From 'information dissemination' point of view, I'd like to point out several things.

When? The lack of notice date. Why? So people can't be sure how long the services are not available?

Why? System maintenance? Is there any problem with the system? Well.. they'd never tell us that of course.

How long? How long does the 'until further notice' means? Every time a system maintenance is done, customers are informed of the time period. Why not this one? With some time indication, I can decide whether to queue at the ATM or the counter to do my 3rd party account transfer, or wait until the service is back to normal again.

Teh O Halia

I love Ginger Tea or more specific, 'Teh O Halia'. Once, I forgot to mention the 'O' when ordering one (just said 'teh halia'), and a ginger flavored tea with milk was brought to me. Iiieeewww.... it's not to bad actually except for the fact I don't like milk. In my opinion, you can get the best ginger tea in any 'mamak' restaurant. You can also make it yourself. There's a step-by-step guide on how to make one here but for my favorite Teh O Halia, I would add half a teaspoon of tea to it. The ginger can be sliced or crushed lightly, whichever way you prefer.

I thought this is a well-known Malaysian thingy but during one of my trip to KK, in one restaurant, the girl looked puzzle when I ordered 'teh O halia' but she still took my order. When my 'teh O halia' came, almost half the glass was filled with sliced ginger. I thought its quite funny but can only laugh silently since I was alone.

For instant ginger tea anytime, anywhere, now there's a powdered Ginger Tea with Honey from In-Comix. It tastes OK except for the strong Chinese herbs smell that might drive some people away. I'm OK with it though. Here is some info about ginger.

The scientific name of ginger is 'Zingiber officinale'. Among the common uses of ginger mentioned in Herbs for Health section in What You Need To Know About website are:

1. Nausea - Flu, motion and morning sickness.

2. Arthritis / Rheumatism - Warms and promotes circulation. Also has an analgesic effect.

3. Respiratory - Warms and clears upper respiratory congestion.

4. Digestion - Improves appetite, promotes bile flow, calms stomach upsets.

5. Circulation - Reduces platelet "stickiness"

6. Anti-Oxidant - lowers lipid peroxidation.

Warnings: Do not use if taking anti-coagulants.

Source : Ginger - Zingiber officinale

I can attest to no. 3. I have asthma and allergies. Sometimes when the inhaler doesn't work or the sneezes didn't stop, a hot ginger tea will do the trick. Also refer to extracts below for more benefits of ginger.

Ginger has been revered in Indian and Chinese civilizations for over 5000 years for its powerful health imparting properties. In fact, Indian ginger is said to have the most potent medicinal properties. Due to such a prolonged belief, research on ginger benefits was natural. Sure enough, the results were on expected lines:

  • Danish researchers found that ginger can block the effects of prostaglandin - a substance that cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain and can lead to migraines.

  • Ginger was found to be effective for relieving the severity of nausea even in cases of pregnancy.

  • Many women claim that ginger tea helps rid them of menstrual cramps.

  • It has anti-inflammatory properties that can lessen the pain of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Respiratory infections - it is well known for its warming action on the upper respiratory tract, so it has been used to treat colds and flu.

  • It has been found to be effective in cramps caused by stomach gas. Ginger also stimulates digestion.

  • It has a wholesome effect on the circulatory system as it makes the platelets less sticky and is of great benefit in case of circulatory disorders.

  • As a mood enhancer, ginger's cineole content may help contribute to stress relief.

  • It is a great mouth freshener and ginger tea has vastly refreshing properties.

From My Inbox : The Great History

The following were answers provided by 6th graders during a history test. Watch the spelling. Some of the best humor is in the misspelling.

1- Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert. The climate of the Sarah is such that all the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.

2- Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada.

3- Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.

4- The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.

5- Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.

6- In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the java.

7- Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king; dying, he gasped out: "Tee hee, Brutus."

8- Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw.

9- Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen." As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted "Hurrah!."

10- It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. Sir Francis Drake circumsized the world with a 100-foot clipper.

11- The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couple. Romeo's last wish was to be laid by Juliet.

12- Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Ceervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The nest great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.

13- Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backward and declared, "A horse divided against itself cannot stand," Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead.

14- Abraham Lincoln became America's greatest Precedent. Lincoln's mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation. On the night of April 14,1865, Lincoln went to the theater and got shot in his seat by one of the actors in a moving picture show. They believe the assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a supposingly insane actor. This ruined Booth's career.

15- Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. In between he practiced on an old spinster which he kept in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German, half Italian, and half English. He was very large.

16- Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf he wrote loud music. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died for this.

17- The nineteenth century was a time of great many thoughts and inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers to spring up. Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men.

18- Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbits. Charles Darwin was a naturalist who wrote the Organ of the Species. Madman Curie discovered the radio. And Karl Marx became one of the Marx Brothers.

Beautiful Quotes to Energize Tired Minds

No one can go back and make a brand new start. But anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

Knowledge is saying what you know. And wisdom is knowing you do not know everything.

There is no need to boast of your accomplishments and what you can do. A great man is known, he needs no introduction.

    Encouragement and Appreciation

I was out the whole day today for internal company meeting and then went to the client's place. Very very tiring after the very looong holiday. Despite all that, I still try to find opportunity to play with my digital camera. I've found a theme for the photos I'm going to take and will put it up once I got good pictures.

On reading all the interesting blogs linked via PPS, found out my blog was mentioned in VOI (click here). Thanks for the encouragement! I really appreciate it. My thanks also goes to all readers, to those who took some time to comment and to those who send me emails. Its a nice feeling being appreciated after a tiring day :)

Something That Would Be of Interest to Professional Procrastinators

If you've put off important tasks until later and later, getting busy with many not so important activities, always waiting for the right mood to do something, dramatize a commitment to a task rather than actually doing it, you're probably in the same boat as mine. The boat is not going anywhere and its not a nice feeling being in that boat. Probably the few articles below would help.

I find the 5-minutes trick very practical and do-able. It says force ourselves to work on the specific task for just 5 minutes. The chances are, we'd continue doing the work after the 5 minutes are over. Another one is rewarding ourselves after the job is done. Set small goals like doing the work for 15 uninterrupted minutes before getting that cup of tea or coffee or TV break. Very practical isn't it! Now for that most important tip of all. Just do it! I better clear out everything that I've put off by end of the year. I want to start the new year without any shadow of unfinished work, and I'm going to do all that beginning.... tomorrow :D hehe...

    SWAY

This is a song that will really make you sway, and is correctly named too.

    SWAY

When marimba rhythms start to play

Dance with me, make me sway

Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore

Hold me close, sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze

Bend with me, sway with ease

When we dance you have a way with me

Stay with me, sway with me

Other dancers may be on the floor

Dear, but my eyes will see only you

Only you have that magic technique

When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins

    Long before it begins

Make me thrill as only you know how

Sway me smooth, sway me now

Other dancers may be on the floor

Dear, but my eyes will see only you

Only you have that magic technique

When we sway I go weak

I can hear the sounds of violins

    Long before it begins

Make me thrill as only you know how

Sway me smooth, sway me now

When marimba rhythms start to play

Dance with me, make me sway

Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore

Hold me close, sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze

Bend with me, sway with ease

When we dance you have a way with me

Stay with me, sway with me

    When marimba starts to play

Hold me close make me sway

Like the ocean hugs the shore

Hold me close sway me more

Like a flower bending in the breeze

Bend with me, sway with ease

When we dance you have a way with me

Stay with me, sway with me

Original singer of the song is Dino Paul Crocetti @ Dean Martin, a singer, comedian and actor, born on June 7, 1917 and died on Christmas Day, 1995.

The song is now sang by Michael Bublé (pronounced Boo-blay) a 25 year-old Vancouver vocalist.

How Exposed Do I Want To Be?

I'm writing this in response to Aiz's 'Exposing myself' blog entry. When I started blogging, I'm not sure how much should I reveal about myself. I'm still not sure now. Thus, not many personal entries can be found in my blog.

Being a blog reader for several months before deciding to join the group, I've observed a lot. There are times when bloggers are insulted in their own blog just like Aiz said. I've read some colorful comments in Screenshot and VOI to name a few.

I always wonder why some people revel in insulting others. They're not exactly invited in the first place. As some insulted bloggers have said, 'if you don't like what you read, just leave'. Some would argue that it's all about free speeches, bla bla bla... but what would they achieve by insulting people in the name of free speeches? What kind of response are they expecting anyway? If they strongly feel about something, a mature discussion would be better than hurling insults. I thought everyone knows that. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. And sometimes by saying something, it only shows how ignorant and stupid you are.

I also remember a blogger calling blog readers who don't have their own blog and never say anything as stalkers. It kinda hurt being called that, even by strangers. When I visit a blog, especially the few of my favorites, I truly believe they have something interesting and insightful to say, and they have my respect for it. I wonder whether this person disregard the respect given by his/her silent readers. If it is so, probably an indication should be made somewhere so I don't wander to the place I'm not welcomed.

For personal entries, I really appreciate that they trust their readers enough to share something very personal. I'd quietly read if it's interesting enough, or read everything when I'm so bored, and then leave quietly, as quietly as I came. Sometimes I feel like I'm gate crashing, but the house owner didn't really mind me being there as long as I don't create any trouble. And sometimes I shy away when I say something but was not responded to.

Now that I have my own blog, I'm unsure of how exposed I want to be. I don't mind the few invited friends to know I have a blog. I also don't mind strangers reading my blog as I have nothing to hide... I've always ensure I did not reveal too much anyway. I don't really mind if my brothers knew about my blog but I never tell them about it. But I definitely don't want my boss to find out about my blog... ever. His concern would be how would this effect my productivity at work. The same response I get when he knew about my involvement in my high school and university alumni. Well dear boss, there is more to life than working for you. I have no problem telling him that, he can take it in good grace. But it gets tiring as I'd have to remind him of that every now and then. So this is a totally NO BOSS ZONE.

It's nice having a place where I can write things to let off steam and to share my thoughts. It's also nice to have my own place where I can say something without bothering whether my comments are welcome or not. And we'll never know if the beautiful quote or the funny cartoon we found and share in our blog can sometimes make someone's day. There are several blogs that has managed to do that for me. I'd be glad if mine can do that to others too. I'll continue writing whatever I feel comfortable sharing with the world while maintaining anonymity for now. I'm not important in this blog. What I've written is.

    Eye Trick

The following picture is not animated. Your eyes are making it move. To test this, stare at one spot for a couple seconds and everything will stop moving. Or look at the black center of each circle and it will stop moving. But move your eyes to the next black center, and the previous one will move after you take your eyes away from it. I got dizzy just by looking at all those moving circles.

    No Dream Car

I'm going to start my blog in this new month with something light. There is enough depressing news lately.

I don't have a dream car. At least, not yet. Nothing strikes my fancy that I can't sleep if I don't have it. I'm quite happy with my current car. Very reliable, economical and suits my purpose. Anyway, this particular quiz from Quizilla says I'm a sleek looking BMW Z4 Roadster 3.0i :)

    Capturing A Dewy Morning

I've been having fun playing with my new toy. The photo output is in JPEG format, and video output is in QuickTime movie format. The first thing I want to do is to combine all the short videos taken during 'raya' into a long one. Found some useful tips here. QuickTime Pro is required to combine all the short movies. Managed to do that but I'm still hunting for a software where I can add special effects and background sound to my movie.

The photo quality is fantastic. Here are some taken early this morning. Click on the photo for larger image. However, the original photos have been resized so it won't take ages to view them.

    End of Ramadhan Thoughts

Drive carefully at all times. Always think of your loved ones. Be responsible parents. Know what your children are doing. They might be playing with firecrackers and endangering their lives and others.

All these reminders are becoming so common that people might have just blocked them out as noise. Yet, we still hear of many fatal accidents and children wounded by firecrackers. Who should we blame?

Should we blame the impatient driver? Or maybe, the slow vehicle on the right lane or on the only lane is at fault? Maybe what you do or don't do can cause accidents to other people. An example would be giving a signal too late when you want to turn at a junction. Other people will speed since they thought there are no reasons for them to slow down. How would you feel if what you do or didn't do causes other people's accidents?

Should we blame the seller of the firecracker? Or maybe the children themselves are to be blame since they know bad things can happen with the firecrackers. They should know better since they must have seen all those children already wounded from firecracker mishaps shown on TV. What is the responsibility of the parents then? Maybe they are too tired with daily chores that having their children playing outside the house is a great relief. Don't care what the children do, as long as they come back in one piece.

So many questions and maybes there. Only YOU know the answer. If you feel at peace with yourself, with whatever that you're doing, and your conscience are clear, good for you. Otherwise, you're existence in this world is a nuisance and I don't think such people are fit to be living in the society. These words maybe too harsh in the approaching Syawal with its spirit of forgiving and seeking forgiveness. But that is what I feel every time when the news of fatal accidents and wounded children are shown on TV. A numbing sadness, robbing the place of the festive cheerfulness.

Lastly, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Aidilfitri and Maaf Zahir Batin. Be happy and be safe.

    My New Toys

It has been quite some time since I last write something in this blog. Several things happening in the last few days has been making me quite busy.

I have a new super duper notebook :) My old one is a Toshiba Satellite 1800. I'll really miss my Toshiba. I didn't give it a name, so I just called it Toshiba. I've been using it for almost 2 years now. Aside from the BIOS problem in the beginning, it has been quite reliable. But my new IBM Thinkpad R40 really makes me drool with its 40Gb hard disk, combo drive, 15" screen, Centrino and few other cool features.

I also have another new toy. Look at picture :) Both will keep me busy during the long holiday apart from the normal things people do during raya.

The Joy and Agony of Telecommuting

Telecommuting : The practice of working at home and communicating with your fellow workers through the phone, typically with a computer and modem. Telecommuting saves the employee getting to and from work and saves the employer from supplying support services such as heating and cleaning, but it can also deprive the worker of social contact and support. (1995-01-05) Definition by: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing, © 1993-2003 Denis Howe

Telecommuting : To work at home by the use of an electronic linkup with a central office. Definition by: Merriam-Webster Online

How many of you dream of working in the comfort of your home? I'm among the lucky few in the country whose company practices telecommuting. It has not been that easy explaining what I do to my friends though. The first time they heard I'm working at home, their first question would be whether I'm doing tele marketing or worse, spamming other people's mailboxes with unwanted advertisements. I'm also not doing freelancing work. I'm working for an IT company doing real business with real projects and get paid a monthly salary. Communication is done mainly through the phone and email, and also there's the weekly discussion where we have to meet in the office. I still have to go and see the clients for demo, training and consultancy at times.

Working at home has its joy and agony if I may say.

There's no streamyx in my area yet so it can be quite painful when downloading large files. I also have to put my feet down to get the space I need sometimes. If I'm not careful, I'll feel like I'm working 24-7.

First is a telephone rule. No calls after 10 p.m. and during weekends. My boss argues that since we didn't see each other that much, he wants to be able to communicate any time he needs to discuss something. My argument is, even though we didn't see each other that much, I still put in 9-5 everyday unless I can't help it. Luckily, my logic prevails. And my conscience dictates that I replace the amount of time I was away from work on personal matter unless I'm taking leave. Anyway, the general rule is to complete the work before the deadline, no matter how we manage our time. Discipline is the key.

We must also ensure our family members know that even though we're at home, we have to work. I can't go to the supermarket or anywhere at their whims and fancy. Its a bit difficult at first but after sometime, they know when its working time.

Sometimes it is quite difficult when you have to run some errands, which can be done over lunch hour for most people like paying bills, or buy one little thing from the supermarket when you're already so comfortable at home. So lazy to dressed up and go out even if its a short distance and only for a short while. I normally save that to the time when I really have to go out. And thank God for Maybank2u too.

It can get lonely working alone sometimes. Luckily we have the at least once a week internal meeting/discussion aside from going to the client's place. It can also get very hectic. Sometimes I've to work from morning up to midnight with only few short breaks for meal and prayer in between. And sometimes I have to go out for meetings or training almost every day of the week too. When things slowed down a bit, I'll have shorter working hours then. You have to be ready to give some and take some in this case. The job is definitely not suitable for people who are very particular and calculative. And I don't claim for mileage if the client's place is in a reasonable distance since I don't have to go out everyday.

Some advice on telecommuting is to have a special room set aside for work. That way it will be easier to leave the work or end the office hour. My office is in my bedroom. Luckily I don't have any trouble blocking out work when I want to and the bed is not a big temptation too. Sometimes I even forgot to lie down for a while to rest, and occasionally I'd almost forgot lunch too until mom reminds me to stop for one.

The good thing is since I stayed quite far from civilization [Read: There's no streamyx service in my area]; I really save up on petrol and car service, and less strain due to the traffic too. I have the experience of going to work everyday for about 2 years (while staying so far) and the mileage hits 5000 km in every 2 months and I only work a 5-day week then. Can you imagine that!

And working at home means I can do the laundry while working, take a break to hang them and again take a break to collect the clothes if it rains. I can also go back to sleep after prayer and wake up at 8.30 to start working at 9 and take a late bath if I want too. When there is no tight deadline, I can take a break to watch Oprah in the afternoon while having home-cooked lunch and shorter working hours :) I also don't have to think of what to wear to office everyday. Isn't that nice?

I can never imagine having to go to office everyday now. So in terms of loyalty, I'm stuck with the company unless there are other companies offering similar deals. In terms of job satisfaction, yes the job satisfaction is there with every completed project and every technical challenge faced in our work. My satisfaction is in doing a good job and not to be seen doing a good job, be seen with branded and brand new whatever... so I'm quite OK there.

I wonder sometimes whether there are any other companies practising telecommuting in Malaysia? If there is, what kind of business are they in. Do you know anyone who is in one? Are you one? What is your experience?

    YES!!! I want Streamyx

I know people have been complaining this and that about streamyx but I believe what ever you get with Streamyx, it is still much much better than dial-up. Streamyx gives problem every now and then? So is TM Net especially recently. One reason I have Jaring account as backup. I was thinking of not topping up my Jaring account after the merger announcement but the so unreliable TM Net connection changed my mind. The crux of the matter is, I must be living in a very ulu place since they can't provide the streamyx service here but not ulu enough as I'm able to receive numerous email promotions about the service. What are they thinking tempting me with something they know I can't get.

On top of that, did I mention how ugly the email is. For a promotion, I'm sure I can do much better than that. My reply to them below. Some info 'encrypted' :) Don't want to be getting calls from secret admirers there. I've been getting some even without any promotion.

From My Inbox: Friends, Love and Happiness

Happiness is like perfume, you can't pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself .

Love has its own time, season and own reasons! You can't ask it to stay, you can only embrace it as it comes and be glad that for a moment in your life it was yours!

True love doesn't have a happy ending. That's because true love doesn't have an ending. A heart truly in love never loses hope but always believes in the promise of love, no matter how long the time and how far the distance.

As long as we have memories, yesterday remains, as long as we have hope, tomorrow awaits. As long as we have friendship, each day is never a waste.

Friends are like stars. You can't always see them, but you know they are there. Have great hopes and dare to go all out for them. Have great dreams and dare to live them. Have tremendous expectations and believe in them.

    The recipe of friendship :

    1 cup of sharing

    2 cups of caring

1 cup of forgiveness and hugs of tenderness

Mix all these together to make friends forever.

News : On What Really Matters

Come on people. "Work WITH me, not FOR me", and among the advice given are as below.

The Prime Minister also had another piece of advice – all future government events and launches should be simple and moderate. Some ceremonies, he complained, were “way too elaborate,” adding that such functions not only took up much time, but also involved great cost.

These events, he told secretaries-general of ministries and heads of department, should be held moderately as what was more important was how a particular project was going to be implemented.

For a start, the public and private sectors should do away with the kompang bearers and lion dance and nadasuram-mirthangam (Indian trumpet-drum) performers when our leaders go on routine visits to states.

It is their job to inspect projects and meet the people. Such practices are unheard of in other countries as they are reserved only for visiting dignitaries. But in Malaysia, the kaki bodek (apple polishers) have turned such extravagances into a compulsory ritual.

It is commendable to show off our cultural richness from every major ethnic group, but these seem to have become permanent features at every function now. In addition, women and children are made to stand for hours, sometimes under the hot sun, by the organisers to be “petal sprinklers” for a VIP who most times walked by without even showing any sign of appreciation.

School children definitely should not be dragged in to make up the crowd, often in uncomfortable situations. If politicians and members of political parties and social organisations want to show support for a leader, it is fine, but leave the children out.

Pak Lah is right in suggesting there was no need to spend a lot on fancy corsages, which he jokingly said “poke through our clothes when they are placed on us.” It is the same with garlands, if we may add. It is time for Malaysians to discard our obsession with forms and rituals and to focus our energies on substance and action. Expensive ceremonies, which take up our productive energy, do not correspond with calls to make ourselves more efficient.

The new leadership has made it clear – wakil rakyat and officials should be spending their time serving the people and not following him around, especially when their presence is not needed. They will be judged on their performance and results and not on how grand and elaborate their gatherings are.

For the true spirit of 'Malaysia BOLEH!', I'd like to see things changing for the better.

News : PM Directs Treasury to Settle Bills with Suppliers

Its about time for the PM to mention something about this. Not all government suppliers have cash to spare. For some, every single cent is crucial for the business's cash flow. And yet we often hear payments are only made after 5-6 months if you're lucky. And for those who rendered the service in the beginning of the year, too bad for you as most of the time payment are only speeded up at the end of the year. What do you do? You wait loh!

The Treasury has been directed to take immediate measures to settle all outstanding payments to government suppliers and ensure that future payments be made within 30 days of the delivery of goods or services.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the Government must be a good paymaster and not delay payments for goods supplied and services rendered.

Marketing 101 For Spammers: The 5 Tips

    1. Potential clients will get pissed off when you change their email address to some rubbish like @#$xc%@#gjkl. Email address is like a name, an identification people use in the cyber world. How would you feel if people change your name from Joe or Jane to svxt^&$%#@w where you can't even pronounce it properly. Don't ever think that your potential client will warmed up to you with such tactics.

    2. Only sell products that people will need or perceived they would need. A good marketer should at least try to find out the gender of the potential customer, to sell gender based items. Telling a lady that she needs to 'lengthen' a certain part of anatomy that she didn't have; or telling a guy he needs a 'larger' breast is a big NO-NO. In real world, consider yourself lucky if you only get bashed in the head for that.

    3. Suggesting your clients are stupid enough to have a huge, mounting, out-of-controlled debt, or worse, even stupider to get someone who didn't know their real name to sort out their problems (even if they have one) is another big NO-NO. Customer is king, customer is always right and customer is intelligent. If your potential customers have even the slightest feeling that you don't regard their intelligence very highly, your chance is a complete zero. They will not buy things or services from someone with 62A8H8We567kDJ65G5BR8Uh8tso@T010bp0g5f8.etscape.net as a business email address. Get a real one so it'll be easier for your potential clients to blocked them.

    4. They don't need your travel plan or free tickets either. The tele-marketing people with real name and real contact number they get from the name cards people leave at conventions in hotel still have a hard time convincing them to fall into their free hotel accommodation scheme. What chances do you have if you call your customer svxt^&$%#@w and advertise yourself as UR62S8H7Pe5MGN3QM@38.ycos.com?

    5. Thinking that people will get all excited by your offer of free single password to porn sites is like believing you'll get the big break from that one particular lottery ticket. It'll never happen... not now, not ever. For those who want it, they have better options from the RM5 vcd peddlers. Yes! Your direct competition is still around, stronger than ever.

The ULTIMATE TIP: Stop sending me email. I'm getting tired of deleting them all.
