Teach Them How To Fish

I'm fuming when reading PAS state assemblyman's statement highlighted in Screenshot. Please allow me to quote you Jeff.

PAS state assemblyman Satiful Bahari Mamat asked the Terengganu government to promote polygamy rather than teaching computer literacy to single mothers who face financial hardship. He said this is allowed under Islam.

He said computer will be difficult for them to learn.

Before anyone get me wrong, I'm not pro any political parties. You did things right, you get my support.

Saying computer will be difficult for them to learn is another way of saying they are not intelligent enough to learn. Practically, some will be slow learners, and some will be a fast learner (both for men and women), but we'll never know until we give them a chance. And based on the higher percentage of female in the university, I dare say it will not be a problem for them to learn. There are 1001 things you can do with some computer knowledge. If there are 4000 single mothers in the state, I'd say it's impossible if not even 10% of them can come up with great ideas.

The prophet s.a.w also encourages all Muslim man and woman to seek knowledge. Among the hadith are:

"Seek knowledge even as far as China."

Ayeshah praised the women of Ansar for their spirit of enquiry and learning, saying, 'How praiseworthy are the women of Ansar that their modesty does not prevent them from attempts at learning and the acquisition of knowledge.' (Sahih Muslim Kitab al Tahrat).

He who goes out in search of knowledge is in God's path till he returns. (Tirmidhi, Darimi).

And a special quote that I'd like to highlight to you:

"Give a woman a fish, you feed her for the day. Teach the woman how to fish, you'll feed her for the lifetime".

Giving a woman a husband does not necessarily mean you feed her for a lifetime Mr. Satiful. Asking a man to take another wife when he's unable to support them is certainly not allowed in Islam. Do you have any idea how many Muslim men of marriageable age are there in your state, their level of income, the number of children they have and any other responsibilities they might have like supporting parents or siblings? Based on that information, you can estimate how many men can actually take another wife from the 4000 single mothers if they have not already have more than one. Even if they can take more than one wife, some might not want to for fearing they will not be able to do justice to them. You then have to make some discount on these men to come up with the real numbers.

It is easy to say what is allowed and not allowed in Islam. I know Muslim men like to say that especially when it comes to polygamy but if you backed it up with real numbers, you might appear as making sound suggestion.

I have strong faith in all women in the world. The Terengganu women CAN learn computers. It's easier than managing a husband.
