Misyar: Finally Someone With Sense

Finally, there is someone with sense. Dr. Syed Ali Tawfiq Al-Attas gave relevant points after points. Shame on the Prof. Refer original article here and the PDF version here.

Extracts:
  1. “We have to ask if the problem relates to Muslim women finding it hard to get married or the women choosing to be single? Then only can we start looking for solutions”.
  2. Dr Syed Ali said Islam advocated justice and responsibility in marriage. He added that men intending to marry must give an undertaking that they were honest, responsible and able to give just treatment to their wife and her family.
  3. “I don’t understand why Muslims now are bringing up matters that are trivial and which only serve to bring confusion and worries to society,” he added. He said the issue was not prevalent in the times of Prophet Muhammad. He added that Muslims must look back in history to find out when the practice actually started.
  4. “We have many unresolved issues affecting Muslims that we need to take care of, such as increasing divorce rates, truancy in schools and universities and girls excelling over boys in their studies.”
Spot on Dr! Spot on!

I'm confused though with a statement by the president of Single Mothers Association Malaysia, “If we look at marriage as a shared responsibility, we can resolve a lot of problems faced by unmarried women”.

I wonder what the problems are? What problems do you have being single? The society look at you differently? That's not the women's problem isn't it? That's the society's problem. As far as I can see, an unmarried woman only has her laundry to think about, her lunch, her dinner, her outstation work, her money (or lack of it), her job, her mess in the house and everything hers, which some married-with-problem-women look at with envy.

I'm not declaring I'm off marriage. I do want to get married to a responsible man who wants to 'provide' for his family but being single is OK too. It is not death penalty, there is no problem at all. It would take a strong emotional bonding for any women to agree to share (yeah right) doing all the laundry in the house, cleaning up everyone's mess, preparing a proper meal instead of yesterday's leftovers or maggi mee if they're tired and so on. Lust does not provide that bond.

My Movie Marathon

I didn’t make it. The Ikano/Curve/Tesco outing planned today. It rains while I was drying my hair. I don’t mind the going out. It is the coming back that concerns me. What if the rain didn’t stopped? There’ll be traffic jam, possible flash flood at Jalan Sg. Buloh area, and God knows what else. OK! That’s just an excuse. A valid one though.

Remember last Friday it was raining cats and dogs? The jam was terrible and I was stuck in it while urgently needing to go to the bathroom. I mean really, really urgent. Must be due to the ABC I had earlier. I was even thinking of stopping by the roadside in the middle of city center, open up two car doors and I can do my business in between the open doors while holding two umbrellas. For the top and front (or between the two doors if you got what I mean). Seriously... it was that bad. The rain was so heavy that nobody would bother looking. Luckily I didn’t have to resort to that. I found a petrol station after about 40 minutes I think. You just can’t imagine the feeling of relief. Aaahhhhh.....

Anyway, I managed to get my supplies for smoothies at the nearest J-One today and continued my movie marathon from the weekend.

  1. The Pacifier – surprisingly entertaining and I suddenly find bald man attractive.
  2. Bewitched – Nicole Kidman is really sweet and adorable.
  3. Princess Bride – so romantic and funny...
  4. Sweet Home Alabama – no chemistry between Reese Witherspoon and her two men
  5. 13 Going on 30 – really funny, a reminder that geek can turn out to be a hunk or just someone nice and the hunk could turn out to be a looser.
  6. Shall We Dance – now, where can I learn ballroom dancing? Richard Gere has one of the sexiest smile :p
If there’s nothing interesting tonight, I might continue with my movie marathon. I haven’t watch this many movies even for the whole year last year. These are among the few movies I missed watching when it is showing.

Half Year Evaluation

I'm on leave till tomorrow. I'm supposed to go jungle trekking but I have to postpone the trip till August. So I have nothing planned but lazed around and do what I wanna do. Last night I was thinking that I should wake up early today, go to the nearest supermarket to stock up on fruits (I wanna make smoothies), go to LHDN (I can't sign my BE Form last night), go to Ikano/Curve to look for books at Popular and Borders, drop by at Tesco and come back to enjoy the book I bought. Nice plan. But I'm still at home and has not gone out yet. Sigh!

I solved my e-Filing problem so I don't have to go to LHDN. But the rest must be done. Maybe I go to Ikano/Curve/Tesco a bit later in the afternoon and only buy fruits on my way back. I can have my fruit smoothie at The Curve before making my own. That's a successful procrastinator at work. Flexibility is good but sometimes I wonder why is it so hard to follow my own plans. Like the time I plan to sleep at 11pm and wake up at 5.30am to do Yoga or some exercise and prepare a healthy breakfast before going to work. It never happens. Well... maybe once or twice but not as often as I wish.

Half of the year would have gone past by end of next month. I have not make any wish list in the beginning of the year like last year. I have just changed job so I have nothing much to wish for yet. Just observe and experience the change. How I have fared so far? This is my almost-half-year evaluation.

MY JOB

I accepted the job because I wanted to go into training and travel. I did the training part but the traveling did not happen. I'm handling system trainings which require a computer room and connection to the server. The training environment is only available at HQ. The other trainers got to travel though. Sometimes they conducted the training at our centres, sometimes they conducted the training at the hotel. For the next half of the year, I'm hoping the proposal for me to conduct outstation training is approved. I'd know about it by June. If the traveling still did not happen, I'll be looking for other opportunities.

As for the responsibilities of the job, very time consuming. All the learning and preparing and delivering is taking its toll on my social life. I was mentally tired to do anything else. And I thought my previous job was hard. I did not regret quitting the job though. I needed the change and the assurance that my skills are valuable and demanded in the market. I got the assurance :)

MY FRIENDS

The two who always came to overnight at my place, one got married and moved to JB and the other got a job in Singapore. I'm happy for them but I also get lonely here. Another one is getting engaged today. Can't ask him to be my escort when the need arises anymore :) You know, the time when I don't want to attend a wedding alone or go on a photography outing by myself. Another friend, I don't know what happen to her. She didn't answer my call/sms/email. She did mention once when we saw each other the last time that once before she withdraws from everyone to sort out her personal issues. Maybe she is having another issue to sort out now.

Oh and another friend has moved to KL from East Malaysia so I can have her company every now and then. Thank God :) The rest, they are busy with their families so I would normally initiate the effort to meet or went to their house. Since I'm occupied with my job and mentally tired, all I wanna do on weekend is rest and be left alone.

Only recently I joined a society to force myself to join an activity. Just join and have fun. Not initiating and planning and worrying about the logistics and whatnots. It was great and I met new friends there.

MY SOCIAL LIFE

I have not travel and go on a holiday as much as I like this year. Come to think of it, I don't have much of a social life this year. It was work, work and work. Sigh! I hope that will change in the next half of the year. Almost all the training materials are prepared by now so I can have more time for myself and not feel so tired after work.

MY FAMILY
My mom and youngest brother has moved to Johor. He's trasferred there but I see them almost as often as when they're here because he always has a meeting in KL. Mom would come and stay with me then and we got to do things together when my brother is not around. He can be a pain when he wants to follow us shopping. Always coming up with a reason why we shouldn't buy things. But, he got to carry our shopping bags too so I won't complain so much :)

MY LOVE LIFE

Hmmm... won't go there.

MY FINANCES

It could be better. If I'm diligent enough, things will be better by September. Right now, I'm not purchasing anything big. No new hand phone, no new camera (I might not be patient for this one though), and no new car. Shopping for new clothes, shoes and handbag however, will still continue :) There must always be a balance between prudent spending and pleasures of shopping. I know, I know, I used to not like shopping but it is OK now when I'm in the mood.

Someone mentioned I'm a reborn woman since I go from no shopping to shopping and only Computer magazines to MWW and Cleo and sometimes Female too. I got tired of the Computer magazines. There's nothing new after a while. The same topic but newer version of gadgets in the market. I'm reading Digital Photography Magazine now though so I haven't totally been converted to women-magazine-only-gal :)

All in all, I'm thankful I can take care of myself. Problems will arise every now and then. What will life be without it. OK. I better post this entry and get ready to go out as planned, before it rains and I abandon my plans altogether.

e-Filing Due Day After Tomorrow

I have finally done my e-Filing today hahahaha....

I have problem signing the BE Form last night. I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader 7.0.7 even though I already am using version 7.0.5 and disabled my Firewall, still nothing happen. This morning I called their hotline number 1-300-88-3010 and a very competent lady instructed me to download DIGICERT CLASS 2 ROOT CA and DIGISIGN ID BASIC at Digicert Malaysia. Go to Solution > Download Root Certificate.

I really am impressed. How often do you call Government hotline number and got answered and not being passed around and their instruction solve your problem? This is the first for me.

By the way, I have to open my IE browser when I click on the Signature button so it will pick up IE to continue with the signing confirmation and not my Firefox browser. It won't work with Firefox.

Do yours quickly. You'll never know if you hard disk crash or streamyx down or their server down so better not wait till the last day. I have not done mine earlier coz I know I'll be on leave today and if something is not right, I can quickly drive to Jalan Duta. Good excuse right? Hehehe...

Meaning of Your Name

It feels strange reading some formula calculated outcome that almost describes you perfectly. Only 'almost' but still an eye opening to me. I go Wow! again and again. Try it yourself here.

Misyar? So What If I Died A Virgin!

So what if I died a virgin! You won’t miss things you never have.

I’m not surprised with Nik Aziz’s support for Misyar. Besides, one of his MPs remarked about ‘gatal’ PAS Kelantanese women isn’t it? I’m sure these women are desperate for men if the allegations are true. Before any Kelantanese women attacked me, refer to this entry. Since Fatah is a Kelantan PAS MP, he would have had more contact with more Kelantanese PAS women and observe them more to come up with such remarks. And maybe... the Prof. who came up with the idea is a Kelantanese too.

I’m not going to dwell so much on the legality of Misyar. Even if every man in Malaysia go on a bended knee and beg Malaysian women to agree to Misyar, it won’t happen if no women agrees to it.

I just wonder though on the mentality of the person who comes up with this ‘solution’ to solve the issues of unmarried and divorced women in the country. Did he know why more women choose to remain single or why some choose to get a divorce?

Could it be due to the quality of Malaysian Muslim men who have no qualms about abandoning their responsibility? And now they want to make it legal for men not to have any responsibilities other than sexual needs? What if they even suck with that? We would have cases in the Syariah court where women wants to get a divorce because their husband’s performance is not up to their expectation and they are married just for that purpose only.

If they can't perform their only duty well, there is no need to keep them around any longer isn't it? The Syariah court better accept that reason for a divorce without prolonging the case unnecessarily like what many women have to endure now. In the end I think we’ll become like the Amazonian women where men is only good for one thing and we can discard them when their service is no longer required.

Would men’s ego take it? Just imagine, men with four wives (they can well afford four wives now because they don’t have to pay a single cent to support them) who are at the beck and call of their wives to perform their duties. Just like a gigolo except the wives don’t have to pay them for their service. And how would the children view their father? Boys would grow up thinking they are only good at one thing. Don't have to study so hard. Just make sure they look good so women will pick them as the husband.

Come to think of it, is Misyar really to help the women or the men? Datuk Shahrizat did say women could live without men and I’ve seen the evidence. It is a fact we have more ladies in higher educational institution which leads to better career and pay for the women. So now many men can’t afford to pay for the marriage gift or hantaran in addition to the other wedding expenses. So no money means no marriage and no wife. I wonder who is more desperate here. It could be those where the local playboy magazine finds a market.

Pangkor Ferry Techno

We get into the ferry and tried to find the best seat. I had no idea how long it will take to get to Pangkor from Lumut. I went to Pangkor ages ago, it was at night and I don’t remember much except there’re two stops and my friends laughed at me when I tried to get off on the first stop. The locals get off on the first stop and the tourist on the second.

I sat by the window hoping to get some nice views. After a few minutes, I think the seat at the opposite window is better since I was facing the sun. Everything was so bright and hazy. A friend said the grass is always greener at the other side which I can take literally since I can see nice greeneries at the opposite window hehehe…

Anyway, we begin the journey ‘entertained’ with deafening techno music. Can you imagine going to Hawaii and they played techno music to greet you? Why can’t they find some nice local music to introduce everyone, local and foreign tourist, to our culture? I remembered enjoying Dondang Sayang during boat ride at Putrajaya Lake. It is not the kind of music I listened to every day but I really enjoyed it that time because it sets the mood.

I wish the ferry operators would come to their senses and get rid of the deafening techno music and find something more local and soothing to the ears. My friend take out her F1 ear plugs and use it to block out the noise.

There is only one stop now and the ride is shorter. Thank God! Many of us are hesitant to get off at first but after seeing almost everyone getting off, we just follow suit. There’s no instruction whatsoever. If only there is some announcement welcoming us to the island and wishing we had a nice time on the short ferry ride. The service sure could be improved. On the way back, I went out to the deck and my ear was spared from techno torture.

More on Pangkor Trip here.

Pangkor Trip

All the way to Pangkor, I prayed it would not rain. The dark clouds were playing "Chipsmore" on us. Now you see it, now you don't. There are 6 cars altogether. 2 more will join us at Lumut. I only knew a few people from the group but I'm very excited to be on the trip. They are a group of photography enthusiast who loves traveling. I can only listen to their many traveling tales with envy.

The group includes healthy 50, 60 and 70-year olds. I feel so self-conscious when I sneezed non-stop due to allergy, has to take anti-histamine immediately after seafood to prevent untoward allergic reactions, getting painful sunburn even after putting dollops and dollops of sun block and most of them are very much older than I am without even once complaining about health problem.

Teluk Nipah is not a Celcom territory. There is no coverage at all. We stayed at Nipah Bay Villa. The room is so-so. I got the top bunk and it was dusty. Luckily one of the girls offered her silk sleeping bag so I can cover the sheets. It helped a little but I still woke up feeling like I've inhaled layers of dust.

After checking in, we went out trekking to the nearest waterfall. It was a very small waterfall, with a pool of water smaller than the normal bathtub and very shallow like a children's section in the swimming pool. Anyway, I really love the exercise. We went to the beach for the sunset but it was early so I went back to freshen up.

At about 7, everyone was ready with their tripod. A few who don’t have one also get into position to capture the beautiful sunset. At the same time, several speed boats doing stunts in the water to our delight. But one incident marred the evening. Nothing happened but it could. One speedboat carrying several passengers sped to a stop at the beach where there are many people still playing in the water. The passengers were almost thrown out of the boat but managed to grab on to something. They looked like rag dolls tumbling in the boat.

Everyone in the boat laugh but I fear one of these days, there's no reason to laugh at the same antic. What if someone was thrown overboard during the rough stop? What if the boat hit somebody swimming in the water? Don't they have common sense at all? Do we need guidelines for everything?

The next morning we went to see some fishermen unloading fishes and a place where they are making nets. The youngest with the net making skills are more than 50 years old. The younger generation did not want to make nets for a living. At lunchtime, the 3 Muslims in the group have difficulty finding food to eat. I decided to ask one pakcik near the mosque if there is any restaurant where we can go to.

He said there's none nearby and invited us to some food at the mosque. There is a function at the mosque and they are cleaning up but there are packs and packs of leftover foods they even invited everyone in the group to eat there. But the others have ordered food at a nearby Chinese restaurant so only the 3 of us ate at the mosque. I'm so touched by their generosity.

Not everyone is as nice though. In the afternoon, we decided to go cycling and the nearest place where we can rent a bicycle is just a few doors away from our chalet i.e. at Ombak Inn. The bicycles were rusty and the owner nasty. He said the new bicycle is RM7 and the old ones are RM3. But he can give us RM5 and RM1.50 for an hour in the afternoon because we ask for 7 bicycles. The thing is, the bicycles are not working properly. We can only use 6. When we asked him to take a look at the bicycle, he said "pay first if you want some service". OK.... so we paid him. But later we found out nothing much he can do as the nuts and bolts are all rusty. We decided to cycle anyway. Very carefully though because the gears are not working and the brakes are in a worrying condition.

Then one of us discovered the chains did not move when she cycles. She went back to the place and the owner started grumbling about us paying so cheap and complaining so much, how we hurt his feelings blablabla. Duh! Helloo... I don't care if you want to rent things for 10 cent but it better work because we rent it for its ability to perform things it is supposed to do. And we hurt his feelings? I don't remember any of us shouting at him. Just trying out the bicycle and complaining about the rust. Anybody would.

What happened to the saying "Customer is King"? Didn't he realized he is only hurting his business in the long run. If you don't provide service with a smile, nobody would come to your place anymore. Just because there are hoardes of people coming to Pangkor doesn't mean they will keep on coming if the beach becomes dirty and places not maintained properly and the folks are grumpy. He is not the only one with attitude. A few chalet owners and stall owners are like that. Maybe they are just nice to foreigners. Hey, they pay in RM, we also pay in RM OK!

Anyway, despite that incident, I'm happy to discover I can cycle after many years. I know people have said cycling is one thing you won't forget but I'm still ecstatic about the fact. Considering the bicycle is such in a poor condition, I did well. I still have a sore backside :p

A good thing about traveling in a big group, we can get discounts or we pay less for an item. We only pay RM2 for the mini van ride because there are 10 passengers in a van. We need 3 vans for every trip. We also paid less for seafood meals. We had seafood dinner twice and did not pay more than RM15 each time for a very sumptuous meal.

On the way back, we went to Teluk Intan to see the Leaning Tower. It was an interesting sight but everyone is already very hot and bothered in the afternoon sun that we didn't stay long. Everyone is longing to get home by now. Luckily, it didn't rain during our trip to Pangkor. It rained a bit on our journey back but not as heavy as the few days last week.

I'm on leave today so I can do the laundry and get some rest. I'm having flu and didn't feel well all day actually. The heat and the tons of seafood has finally taken its toll on me. I drank gallons of water. I hope I'll feel better tomorrow since a day after tomorrow I have to conduct a two-days training.

Sue Is Me

I'm lefthanded and many people assume lefthanded people are creative. I may be creative in some area but not when it comes to giving a name or title to something. I especially fear group work where one of the task is to give the group a name. The suggested names sometimes did not appeal to me but since I haven't got any better idea, I better keep quiet and vote for the best from the list.

There are instances where none of my group members has even an 'unbrilliant' group name idea to start with that we ended up with the name of the group leader as our group name. Sad to say, our group became last in many of the games played. It didn't take much effort since we already failed with the first task i.e. giving the group a name. The name that we'll be proud of.

Because of my inability to come up with interesting names, I am glad I managed to name my blog SuNfLoWeR.cOm due to whatever strike of brilliance that comes to me a long time ago. But the URL is another matter. Sunflower and the many variations to it are already taken. Luckily, I get to host it with LcF at his server and I can use my name (part of it actually) as the URL. Then the server was hijacked and I can't wait for LcF to fix it so I decided to return to Blogger. I was again faced with the task to name my blog. The URL that is. SuNfLoWeR.cOm will remain.

I tried using 'Sue' many times eventhough a message that the name is not available has appeared. The I tried 'Sunflower' expecting it will not be available too. Sigh! After cracking my head trying to find a name that will not deviate too much from my original name, discovered I can use S-U-E as my blogspot name. Yipeeee.... Sue is me. I won't accept other variations like su3 or sue123 or sunflower999 and the likes. I just want to be me.

Here's Sue in Wikipedia. An orange female ghost from Ms. Pac-Man??? Hehehe...

Notice: Being Hijacked

Discovered my original blog address, http://sue.frens.net was hijacked today (06-05-06). I decided to return to Blogger so some pictures and links will be missing until I have the time to fix them.

I have always thought of returning to Blogger now that they provide image uploading function. Not that I'm not happy with my previous site but I'm running out of space there :p So I guess this is time I move on.

My previous blog worth this much.

My blog is worth $6,774.48.
How much is your blog worth?

Invaluable to me actually. Luckily my entries were not lost. Now, I have to start with $0.00, Technorati worth.

01:02:03 04-05-06

One, two, buckle my shoe
Three, four, shut the door
Five, six, pick up sticks
Seven, eight, lay them straight
Nine, ten, a BIIIGGGG... fat hen.

:) Any of you remembers the nursery rhyme above? Do children still learn them in school? I can't remember eleven to twenty last time. I still don't hehehe... No point learning them now but it will be easier to remember now if I make the effort. Anyway, that is not what I want to ramble about today.

What is so great about 01:02:03 04-05-06? If you all notice, the date is using Malaysia's date format which is DD-MM-YY. If an English date format is used, 01:02:03 04-05-06 falls on the 5th of April. I don't see them making a lot of huhas about it last month. Or is there any which I'm not aware of? Huhas that is. Or the DD-MM-YY format is more significant because Day comes before Months that comes before Year? Anyway, I'm not expecting any answers. All I know, there isn't much of a difference and I was already in the dreamland at that exact moment last night.

Just remember today is a friend's birthday. Happy Birthday if you ever set your foot here :)
