There are numerous SMS contest and vote now; one can never be able to keep track of all of them. 'Akademi Fantasia' has been over for months now but ASTRO is still try to get something from it via NTV7, asking people to vote for the silliest category. Even the prime time news has their SMS votes. Another one is an SMS contest on finding Doraemon on RTM. I wonder who the target market is; children with hand phones or parents who are bugged by their children to enter the contest.
You can also easily have your greetings or Valentine's wishes shown on TV just by sending SMS. The gullible people who fall for that must have thought the intended recipient has nothing better to do than sitting glued in front of the TV, watching that particular channel only, and waiting for their message to be displayed.
Even when our 'beloved' 4th Prime Minister is stepping down, Malaysians are encouraged to send SMS saying how much they love the Prime Minister. The carrot dangled at the end of the stick is some condo somewhere if I'm not mistaken. I've forgotten. Anyway, looking at it, the only conclusion I can make is the SMS contests and votes must be very very profitable.
But I also wonder why most contest never bother to announce their winners in the same way they promote the contest. Are there ANY winners at all? Who is keeping track whether the organizers really give the promised prizes? I'm still waiting to know who is the winner of the SMS message and what is the winning message like for the now Tun Dr. Mahathir. Or have I missed any of the winner's announcements?
And today's Utusan carry statement by Perak Mufti that all SMS contest are haram if they involve the characteristics of cheating. Well, if element of cheating is involved, the contest are not only haram but the organizers can also be charged for misleading or cheating the public right? No winners for the SMS contest when they have clearly mentioned the prize to lure people to enter the contest in the first place certainly sounds like cheating to me.
