How many vehicles are there on Malaysian roads?

According to Datuk Emran Kadir of Road Transport DG as reported in the Star today, the number of registered vehicles are 12.48 millions as of July, making Malaysian car ownership to one vehicle for every 4.4 Malaysians. However, the numbers don't quite tally. Malaysian population as at 2000 is 23.3 million as reported here. And the latest population figure reported by the Statistical Department is 25.05 million. Immediately we can see that its about a vehicle for every 2 Malaysians.

Excerpts..

KUALA LUMPUR 17 Sept.

- Utusan Malaysia -

Datuk Emran is further quoted as saying :-

-> 5.25 million of the registered vehicles were private cars.

-> now the JPJ records showed there were 8.02 million motorcycles, 52,127 buses, 9,909 taxis, 728,704 trucks and 35,436 other types of vehicles (the total is 8846176, or about 8.85 million)

::> 5.25 + 8.85 is 14.35 million

Could the 5.25 million figure be only up to July and the other figures are not? I wish the newspaper will give a more intelligent reporting next time. Anyway, other figures sprouted are as below. The JPJ records shows :-

- the Federal Territory had the highest number of vehicles totalling 1.53 million

- Johor comes second with 679,095 vehicles

- Selangor had 661,559 registered vehicles

- Penang had 508,376 registered vehicles

- Perlis has the fewest registered vehicles i.e. 9,966

- Johor had the most number of motorcycles, totalling 912,264

- the Federal Territory comes second at 799,991

- Perak is third at 756,275

- Selangor comes fourth with 690,789 registered motorcycles.
