Internet : Web SMS

Has there been a time when your place suddenly has got no handphone coverage and you can't live without SMS? Fret not as there might be a solution for you (provided you have an internet connection of course). Sending SMS thru web may be the short term answer for your problem. What's the long term solution you ask? Obviously it is to report your problem to your mobile phone network provider lah. OK... here's a few web sms that I've used and might be useful for you too.

  • Bluehyppo - You have to pay for the service and not so reliable when you friend is overseas and using roaming facilities. You need a handphone to register for the facility.

  • iRepublics.com - You must have an account with them, and the service is provided free for their customer. You have an option to use handphone or not when sending messages.

  • ICQ - You can also use ICQ if you have one installed but I'm not sure how many SMS you can send per day since some of the messages I sent got thru and some don't. You don't need a handphone to use the service.

  • Yahoo Messenger - Locally, can only be used by TMTouch user. You don't need a handphone to use the service.

  • Webportal - This is a very reliable free service, but you are limited to 2 sms per day. You don't need a handphone to register for the service.

  • sms.ac - This is also another very reliable free service, but again you are limited to 2 sms per day. You need to give your handphone no. so they can send your activation code via sms. Obviously has to be done when you have network coverage.

Even though some of the free services are limited, at least you can inform your loved ones of your predicament. And almost all of the above services only works with Maxis and Celcom unless otherwise specified. It is wise to check whether it can work with your mobile phone network or you might find you can't use the service after all the hassle of registering.
